The beast saw me at the worst possible time. Face half on, half off, a thousand teeth poking through; we stood there staring at each other while that face dripped down onto a torso made of skin like shredded lettuce. Each breath came with mucus and muscle twitching in the air.
The room froze solid. The beast's eyes were wide and white as they bored into mine, its teeth chattering, limbs clutching the hem of a shirt as their eyes tracked a thousand legs unfolding into the air. Each leg peeled back the skin like the outer layers of an onion. We shared a moment of horror that stretched into eternity as the last of that skin slumped down onto the carpet.
When the thing finally snapped out of it and bared its teeth at me, I turned and ran. What else was I supposed to do? That beast wasn't supposed to see me, and it definitely wasn't meant to see me with my head stuck in a closet, sifting through shirts and jackets for something to cover up with.
The beast will still have my skin, of course. I left that behind. The beast was such a small nightmare- altogether too few eyes, too few legs, barely enough on their body to survive- not even a tail to support it. I figure that it needed that skin more than I did.
